Maria Luis was a new author for me, so when I had a chance to read her new book in exchange for an honest review I thought, “Why not?†and I’m so glad I did! Power Play was a fun, captivating read that captured my attention with its entertaining journey to a great happily ever after. Just the type of book I love to read when I need to escape real life for a couple of hours. And Maria herself is a delightful, good-hearted gal with a great sense of humor and a side of perfectionism – all of which come through in her writing.You can read the book description so I won’t recap here, but this book had just the right mix of conflict, passion and entertainment value, with a little suspense added in. The characters are well developed, the storyline kept moving, and all questions were answered. If there is any critique, it’s that I would have liked a bit more from Duke’s POV. When a book is written from only the heroine’s POV, it’s a challenge to reveal the hero’s thoughts and feelings to the reader without disclosing them to the heroine. But we do get Duke’s POV in the epilogue, which helped satisfy that need. I enjoyed the story and the characters enough that I was left wanting more and truly hope Power Play is the beginning of a fresh new sports romance series.
What a pleasant surprise! This book pulled me in from the very first chapter and kept me glued to my Kindle until I reached the end. A very enjoyable and thoroughly entertaining rom-com at its best, with a bit of steam thrown in to spice it up a little.I'm not usually a fan of sexy stories and descriptive sex scenes, especially when they're used to make the book sexy but don't fit with the context. Even though there is one particularly hot rooftop scene, it was very well combined in the plot and it didn't distract from the rest of the story. If anything, it served to seal the connection and chemistry that had been building until that moment, and when they finally caved, it's safe to say that fireworks exploded in the sky of Boston! The rest of the book is a mix of funny, laugh-out-loud moments, banter, sparks and a bit of angst toward the end.The epilogue made me swoon. I'm a big fan of epilogues and since the book is all in the heroine's point of view, I was so happy that the author decided to include a final chapter in the hero's point of view - which made me fall even harder for him.I immediately connected with the heroine, who's as funny as she is sassy and strong-willed. I laughed and cheered, and rooted for her HEA from the very beginning. Their meet-cute is, well, to die for (meaning, I would've probably died of embarrassment had it happened to me!), and the constant push and pull will offer a roller-coaster ride from chapter one until the last page.I can't wait to read more books by Maria Luis. This was a very well-executed debut novel and I really liked the author's writing style. Even though I'm not usually a fan of first person POV, Maria pulled me right in and kept me entertained throughout the book. Fans of smexy rom-coms will surely love Charlie and Duke's story.
If you're looking for a funny, sexy and witty rom-com, then look no further! Power Play has it all. Duke is one of those strong silent types who mostly speaks with nods and monosyllable conversations. He oozes sex appeal with just a quirk of his brow. He's the type that can make a person wither away with just a look. And that makes him oh so sexy! Although he has trust issues and only lets a few see the real side of him, but he seems open up when ever he's with Charlie. Before Charlie meets Duke, she thinks he's a second rate player chomping at the end of his career. She has no interest in him until her boss gives her an ultimatum get an exclusive interview from him in hopes to save their quickly sinking news paper. She never expected to be so completely drawn to him or have her insides melt with just a whiff of his cologne. What starts off as just an interview to save her job, turns into her doing everything she can to win back his trust and save their relationship. With a hilarious start and an amazing HEA, Power Play is an excellent read. 5 stars all the way! I can't wait to get started on the rest of the series!
Charlie is a reporter working for an online sports news site. Duke is the goalie for the Boston Blades hockey team and a very private person. She is given the assignment of writing an article on him, with the more dirt the better. She has eight days or her career is over. He doesn't do press, he's been burned before but she doesn't know the meaning of the word no and she fascinates him. Most of what they talk about is off the record and she writes two different articles, a nice one that she is proud of and will probably get her fired and a trashy one that she proceeds to put in the trash, too bad her sleezy boss went in and took it out of the trash, oh Charlie! You have to empty the trash bin!!Can she get Duke to forgive her for the dirt that got splashed across the internet and can their relationship be saved?Hey! It's a romance novel, what do you think??? I'd like to read some more of the Blades Hockey series
This was an Okay read for me, it started off slow and then slowly built up a little. I was so wanting more. To be a sports romance I really missed the game, Its centered around a hockey goalie but their was little play of the game which I missed. I found Charlie to be sparky, and no filter what so ever, she a sports journalist who is trying to keep her job at a no name online news paper thats sinking. She hates her boss and knows she isn't getting anywhere but she still agrees to do anything for her boss. I was just wanting her to grow some you know. Duke Harrison the famed goalie, god gift to the females was a push over to me, I loved him when he was being himself but he was betrayed and forgave so fast, I would never be able to trust Charlie again. I really wanted this to have Dual POV and I would probably liked Charlie better.
