Ronald B. Palma has been teaching Latin and other classics courses at Holland Hall School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the past 32 years. He holds an A.B. in Classics from Cornell University and an M.A. in Classics from the University of Cincinnati, where he did doctoral work funded by a Louise Taft Semple Fellowship. He has co-authored Ecce Romani: A Latin Reading Program (Prentice-Hall, 2005), now in its third edition, and served as series editor for Review and Test Preparation Guide for the Beginning Student and Review and Test Preparation Guide for the Intermediate Student, both published by Prentice-Hall.Palma has received numerous fellowships and awards for both teaching and scholarship, including Rockefeller and Fulbright grants, the Summer Fellowship of the Classical Society of the American Academy in Rome, a Presidential Scholar Award from the U.S. Department of Education, a Special Recognition Award from the College Board, and the Excellence in Pre-Collegiate Teaching Award from the American Philological Association.

This book is typical of many test-prep books: designed to look comprehensive and helpful, when in reality it is neither.At over 600 pages and about 2" thick, you'd think this were a one-stop-shopping Latin prep book. Of course, the publisher uses cheap, pulpy paper and dozens of filler pages (maybe to prepare you for the SAT's "this page is intentionally left blank" motif?) to bulk it up. The CD included is a PC-only electronic walk-through of the two practice tests already printed in the book. I suppose it's helpful if the student would rather sit at a PC than use a pencil. It has no other value.The content of the book reviews each grammatical topic and follows it with SAT-II style questions for practice. The Dative, Gerunds & Gerundives, The Subjunctive, etc. There are a few handy sections like "ways to express purpose" which are helpful for the Syntax Substitution portion of the exam. Students do value having these very different constructions lined up side-by-side, seeing how they express the same thing in different syntactical ways. The vocabulary choice is curious; it doesn't line up clearly with any commonly used high school textbook series, nor does the author assert that it is derived from known SAT-II usage. Translation passages are limited.The volume is little improvement over the prior edition and fixes few of the typos. Since this is All There Is specifically designed for Latin SAT-II prep, it's better than nothing.
to be honest, let me start this review by saying that I am not quite sure exactly HOW helpful this book is for the test, as it is because of this book that I didn't take the test.I only took one practice test and did badly on here to know that I was not ready to take a real subject test on this and accept below 500 as my score. The book seems to have good, comprehensive, and complete coverage of the various items involved on the test and display this knowledge well. Seems very detailed overall, which is helpful for the test (so I assume).However, there are a few places where this book falls short. First, the software is only compatible with a Windows computer, so if you plan to use it and have a Mac, you may want to reconsider. Also, there are only two practice tests in this book, which seems very inadequate, especially given the lack of other source material on this test. Despite the difficulty associated with making practice out of something unknown, other publishers have managed to do so with other tests from the CollegeBoard, and I would therefore expect the same from this publisher.So overall, good review, but lacking in actual practice for the test.
This is a good study guide if you are looking for something both condensed and comprehensive, and are running short on time. I would highly recommend crash course for a quick review book!
Great book. My son had not taken Latin in 2 years and after reviewing the book cover to cover gota 700 on the SAT II , enough to opt out of the language requirement
I studied this book for a few weeks before taking the Latin SAT Subject Test, and I think it helped my score. I highly recommend it!

Why did the publisher not include a CD that plays on both Mac and Windows?I bought this book to have more grammar review and practice tests for my students. The explanations of answers section addresses the logic of determining the correct answer. I would like to see more of this in future editions. Do not purchase the other Latin practice guide (Rudman), which is an outdated flawed product with numerous errors.
I bought this for my teenagers taking the exam in the fall. I looks like a good book with more grammar than they have done so far. More grammar than latin for America and the national latin examination.
