This is known as the bible of poker, and I can understand why. There is a lot of in-depth information. Everything Doyle writes seems to be on the money, but there's one catch.This system worked well back in the 1970s, and probably the 1980s and 1990s, but once Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker and so many people flooded the poker market, it led to a great deal of passion for the game, and those who were most passionate educated themselves as much as possible -- including Super System.This altered the game, and the aggressive style Doyle used to implement won't be as effective because there are now many counter-strategies. If you have watched Doyle play over the past decade, you can see that even he doesn't apply the Super System he created, simply because the game has changed.All that said, it's a highly recommended read for any poker player because it will create a strong fundamental base of knowledge. The first section about Doyle and his road to poker can also be inspirational. Just be sure you're ready to fully commit to the game. Otherwise, it will be an expensive hobby.
In summary, a good book. A little dated, but covers all the basics. It’s a big book, (in size. - like a dictionary). Covers all types of poker. It’s been reviewed as the Bible of poker books, I believe that it definetly belongs in your library of poker reference materials. If you can, buy it used, like I did 😎
While many elements of Doyle's approach are considered "outdated", others remain fundamental concepts of how to play the game - particularly no-limit hold 'em. Even for the modern player, reading Brunson's thoughts on the game is crucial, because even if it's not how you personally play, it's a mode of play that every top player understands. Any one who wants to elevate their understanding of the game and its history should read this book.
The last book I bought was Texas Holdem For Dummies. I read that one and the next thing I knew I was sitting next to Doyle in Las Vegas and he said I should read his book. SO I bought it. Pretty easy read RIGHT. If you remember half of the stuff in this book you will rob your friends blind at you locale home game. Yea even if the buy in is in the six figure's Only a few people know the odds and know how to play them. This book separates the best from the rest. If you don't have this one GET IT> but read Texas Holdem for Dummies first! just kidding. Get this one first and it will help you to understand the Dummies book .
Well, many years after Super System, Doyle did it again, offering a book with his recognisable name on the title and top class contributors to it. It is a book worth studying for anyone interested in learning to play various forms of poker and seeing how some top pros think about the gameI won't give it five stars only because I think the weakest section (not poor or bad, just not as good as other sections or as expected) of the book is actually Doyle's contribution about No Limit Holden, not actually bringing anything new to the world of No Limit Holdem... And our reviews here have to be objective, while our admiration to the grandfather of today's poker revolution is unlimited.Thank you Doyle
We live in a society where everything has to be the latest model, and where the new is always considered superior to the old. However, Super System is a prime example of seventies technology outperforming the recent releases of the twenty-first century. I read the book all the way through simply due to my curiosity about poker. Personally though, Hold 'Em's the only game that I play, so I have reread the 165 pages concerning it over four times thus far; which is quite a statement considering that I bought it in September of 2004. Both chapters on Hold 'Em are excellent. The Limit one was written by Bobby Baldwin, and the No Limit one was written by Lord Doyle himself.I have to say, despite all the flash and flair exuded by today's hip players, if there was only one pro I could meet, it would definitely have to be Doyle Brunson. I admire his story and also treasure the advice he issues on tactics and strategy.I'm sorry that Doyle had to change his style due to the publication of Super System, but I am very grateful that he wrote the book. Studying his suggestions have helped me become a more aggressive and stronger player. I was a rock for too long. I think that you'll continuously be saying to yourself as you peruse it, "Yes, yes, that'll work." It really will.Overall, even if you're not interested in draw, stud, lowball, or high-low split, Doyle's autobiographical essay, and his general poker strategy are must reads. This volume retailed for 100 bucks twenty-six years ago, and, for less than 20 dollars a copy, it's a steal.

How to evaluate the possibilities and use the odds to your favor.There are many illustrations covering possible situations and percentage probability of the results.I have read several books on Hold 'em. This is one I would recommend.
SUPER SYSTEM is dated (one humorous line is author Doyle Brunson talking about scientists that make $35K a year but now of course mailmen make more money than that.) but besides the tested strategy of the legendary poker player there are many interesting anecdotes about his life as a poker player before it was a legitimate and celebrated profession. Though it is longer than it needs to be (was he being paid by the word?) it is a great starting point for new poker players looking to take their game to the next level. And his life from Lakers prospect (before they were in LA) to world champion poker player would make a great movie. What's the deal Hollywood poker players? Why haven't you made Doyle's story into a movie yet? Do it while Texas Dolly is still alive!
