Too much bad language. I had to delete the complete 6 book series.

First, I hate writers that can’t write a full book, but divide stories up into parts so they can sell more books. While I generally like crime books and stories about those who solve crimes, these three stories were filled with lots of nonsense about jurisdictional disputes between different agencies and lots of carping about how the protagonist couldn’t get her job done with others interfering. Then there was all the fluff about Alex’s kids and about how she was so tied up investigating crimes that she could not be a mother. Either be a cop or be a mother!

In At Bay, it bothered me that the ending was TOLD to us instead of SHOWN to us. Throughout the story, almost everything was shown. I felt involved. Then comes the ending and it was all over, no action, no details, simply "this is who did it and now we'll all heal."What gives?I found that to be true in the two subsequent books. Mr. Mefford uses a mixture of showing and telling throughout his books. It's annoying.I also felt that Alex was written as a male's idea of a strong woman and that gave me a unique perspective on the author himself. All in all I felt this was a pedestrian mystery series, packaged for the average, everyday mystery reader who doesn't want anything too highbrow, too complex, or too mentally engaging.

Oh say it isn't so, ANOTHER story that starts with a character waking up in a hospital with amnesia! Wait, what's this? Sneaking out of hospital to go to crime scenes with your FBI partner? Can't remember much at all about even having friends, family, and coworkers but the skills of the job are so ingrained in her that she can still be a huge asset on cases. This was our introduction to Alex in AT Bay Book 1 in the AT series. There are huge plot points in the first book that I don't want to give spoilers to, so that limits what I can say about the next two books. But I can tell you that we get to go along for quite a ride with Alex in this series. Each book can be read as a stand alone novel. But reading them you'll get invested in what happens to Alex and want to know what's next for her. Lucky you, you don't have to wait for JWM to write the next book so you can find out what happens in the next book in the series. Enjoy!!I just bought this box set, I had to, even though I already read the ARC of these three books...

Too unrealistic and Alex Trout's peronality doesn't even come close to being a mother. Mother and tough, crude FBI agent, polar oppisites. Didn't finish series.

I just found these books by John Mefford last week, and since there was a special deal for the first 3 books in the series, I decided to give them a try. I am now hooked! The writing is great, with a good mix of characters, and enough detail about their private lives to make each one interesting. The action is well paced, and the surprises keep you on your toes. I would finish one book, with the intention of waiting a couple of days to read the next, only to find myself drawn to open the next book the very next day. I felt that each book was better than the last. I've already gotten the next 3 books in the series, and hope to meet Mefford's other characters in his different series. Well written, and attention grabbing.

It could have been condensed into one book. Too many boring parts that could have been omitted.

Something is off in these books, it's like a constant cascade of details that don't ring true. Like when Alex Troutt brings her young son with her when she goes to pick up a man who is a suspect in a series of fatal terrorist bombings or how we're supposed to believe that just about everyone in these books (professional, grown people) make cliche sex jokes constantly. It's 2019, do adults really find it funny just to have a gay co-worker?Alex begins the book with amnesia and quickly jumps right back into her job (it's hard to believe the FBI doesn't have any official standards for agents recovering from serious injuries). Alex herself has a deeply inauthentic feel. The best way I can explain it is that she's the kind of "tough woman" than a man imagines he would be. It's not a realistic version of female resiliency, but instead a woman who makes the witty comebacks he imagines he would make if he was facing sexist putdowns, the beatings he'd inflict on criminals, etc. Most of the women in the book, in particular, come across as one-dimensional. There is the sex-crazed nanny, the saintly grandmotherly Latina who replaces the sex-crazed nanny, the silly boy-crazy technical assistant, etc.
