I really like this Dover coloring book. I also bought The Victorian House coloring Book by Dover, which includes a view of the inside of a Victorian Home. This coloring book has many styles of Victorian Houses to color, with a paragraph on each page. Dover is usually a safe bet.
Although there are a few drawbacks, I really enjoy the buildings represented in Victorian Houses. Each were built during the 1800's.+factoids on each building informative yet succinct- drawings on each side of page+ excellent choice for advanced coloring+ color examples for 6 buildings+ minimal black ink!!!!+ paper adequate- concern of marker/pen/paint color bleed through+ drawings centered on houses, filling page with more houseThis is the best of the A. I love Dover and the high detail they provide.This one sort of intimidates me just a bit when I opened it and thought, " Oh I want to color that!" I stopped and thought for a moment and realized, "There is a lot more that I didn't think about when it came to coloring houses."I forgot about the lighting and how shadows fall across roofs,etc. And then I felt the intimidation.I need to think these ones through before I dive into coloring them.
I was expecting this coloring book to be full of houses similar to the one on the cover. I am in love with old gingerbread Victorian houses!Unfortunately, that was not the case. There are a few houses similar to the one on the cover, but there are more styles of houses that are not even close! I guess those houses are technically considered "Victorian," but they were not anything I'd be interested in coloring.Make sure you check out the "Look Inside!" feature before purchasing, so you know what you are getting.
I liked this book but I can't say I loved it. Yes it's full of Victorian houses but I wish that the landscaping around them had been better. I got a little bored with JUST the houses on most. Probably is just me on that AND it was a really fair price which is why I'm going to still give it 4 stars.
Many years ago I owned one of these great ladies. The outside doesn't even start to describe the workmanship and beauty inside.It would have been better is the creator of this book had inserted a blank page between each (on the left side - facing the book) to prevent one drawing from bleeding on the opposite page. I am inserting a sheet of computer paper but ...
Dover's books for older kids are detailed and quite appropriate for adults who are bored by abstract patterns. These houses can require elaborate color choices and careful attention. I like varying bricks, adding shadows, leaf by leaf color variations - it can be as complex as you want. And in the end you have a picture! I like pictures.
The houses are great but there are houses on both sides of the page. My markers bleed thru so one side is unusable.
