My husband is a business traveler who is going to be visiting Brazil soon, and the past year we have been self-teaching ourselves basic Brazilian Portuguese via watching the TV Globo cable television station, particularly news shows and novelas. We have bought many different sized paperback Portuguese dictionaries to use for quick reference, and also because he will be packing one or two in his suitcase for reference when he visits Brazil, and the absolute best is this little blue book from Random House. Just about ANY Portuguese word you hear phonetically, can be found in this dictionary, either the full word or a derivative, including many words and terms specific to Brazil and not strictly Portugal. My only complaint is that the print is almost microscopically small, I know they pack almost 40,000 words in one small book, but they could have enlarged the print SLIGHTLY so you don't get eyestrain. Beware of the "large print version" of this dictionary, as I have purchased several, and always get the same tiny print in the dictionary - it seems there was a limited larger print version at the second or third printing years ago that was only out a few months, and whether new or used, I have never found it. Just use a good pair of magnifying reading glasses and you can read the print, as although small it is clear; each referenced word is in bold print also, which helps somewhat.
This is a no-frills, perfectly sized pocket dictionary to use as a supplement for beginner classes or for quick on-the-go reference while traveling. It has most words you'll need, fits into purses/bags easily and comes in handy when you don't have access to the Internet/Google translate and need to figure out how to explain something. It doesn't have definitions, just translations of words, which is good but beware that there are often subtleties that can't be conveyed in this format, or words that have multiple meanings in different contexts which aren't explained. If you're really looking to learn the language you should not use this as your only reference.
Print is EXTREMELY small. Need a magnifying glass. For some reason, the description says “large print.â€
I bought this dictionary to help me in my Portuguese short course before I travel as well as to use on the trip. So far it has had an entry for everything I looked for but, obviously, there was no practical way to see if it has all the words I will ever need. I wish it had been published on thinner paper so that the entire book would fit better in a pocket. I have a German-English and a Spanish-English that are smaller and thinner. There is no reasonable way to know if they contain the vocabulary this one does. However, this is small enough and will be OK if I carry it in my camera bag or have cargo pants with fatter pockets. Overall I recommend the book.
I compared this pocket dictionary with the much larger Larousse Portuguese-English, English-Portuguese Dictionary and found that the small pocket Random House often offers much better translations. For example, Larousse translates "naftalina" as "naphthaline" (not very helpful!), while the Random House gives "moth balls." Larousse says that "namoro" is "relationship" (leading the reader to think that it could be any relationship), while Random House translates it as "going steady" (much clearer!). Meter o nariz in Larousse is "to stick one's nose in" (which it what it literally means), but Random House gives "to meddle" (much more concise and to the point). For narigudo Larousse tells us "with a large nose," but Random House gives us an adjective we can put in a sentence: big-nosed. For narcotráfico, Larousse gives "drug traffic" while Random House gives "drug smuggling" (I find the latter easier to understand). All in all, a bargain at $6.95, and small enough to carry in your vest pocket. Congratulations to the author, Bobby J. Chamberlain, at the University of Pittsburgh.
Aside from the fact that there were 50 pages missing (half the English alphabet) I was not happy with the dictionary because it did not include pronunciation for any of the words. So you could get a definition for a word but you would not know how to say it. Kind of a drawback if you want to use this for communication purposes. Still searching for the perfect travel companion....
Good product and price.
I gave it four stars only because it is smaller than I thought. My fault, not theirs. These old eyes can see the tiny text font so well.
